Personal Information

Gender: Female

Artist Bio
Linda Hill was raised in Moss Point, MS, as an only child, which gave her plenty of time to develop solitary skills, like art. Her first sentence was "I wanna write" because she’d never heard the word draw before that day. Her mother gave her a marker and some paper and the rest is history. The piece is still hanging on her Mom's wall, even though it looks like an egg with sticks poking out of it and eyeballs. But not bad for someone in diapers, huh? She’s been painting, drawing and being creative since.

Later in life, she stayed close to home to go to MGCCC to receive her first special honors tassel. She got her second tassel from University of South Alabama, where she studied under greats like Sumi Putman and Ben Shamback. She had two majors: Painting and Psychology. After both her parents turned ill, she hurriedly graduated in 2003 with one degree, a BFA, so they both could be there.
Her dream was to be a psychologist, healing by working art into her practice, but somehow life has turned out that she’s an artist who works therapy into the mix, instead. No matter how its done, she loves it!

The reworked dream turned into “Art with Heart in Mississippi”, her non-profit organization in which she and others offer art classes, therapeutic art, workshops, murals and art fair/fundraising advice free. The organization is about sharing the miraculous benefits of creation and being creative. She gives talks on art therapy on request, volunteers at the Moss Point Rec center, Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence and local public schools.

Linda loves all 2-d media, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and pastels. Much of the work is objective in nature- looks like something- and the curvilinear feminine shapes contrasts well with the bold colors and brushwork. Being both stubborn and infinitely curios, her artwork has a broad range from surrealistic expressionism to impressionism to realistic still lives and portraiture.

Currently, Linda (the right brainer) and her husband (the left brainer), photographer Stephen Hill, reside in Moss Point and go to art fairs and shows. At shows, it looks like she doesn't do much because much of her work is done on commission. She deposits art at resteraunts, art fairs, a brief stint at The Art House in Ocean Springs, and is currently at the Train Depot Gallery. She's been published on book covers, in magazines and is collected in public and private collections. But the best place of all to view Linda's work is at her website: www.art-with-heart.com.

Artistic History.: I started drawing when I was in diapers and it was a portrait. Some things never change, I'm attracted to the human form and still love to do portraits.

Later, I would do images from my imagination, in metaphors. In college, I became obsessed with the looseness of the impressionists, as an act of rebellion against my own realistic style. After playing with that for a while, reality crashed down when Hurricane Katrina and other personal crises molded me and my art in ways that I'm still finding out about.

Most of my art is done on commissions now- too cool. I'd never have believed I'd ever say that :)

My husband and I started an Art non-profit organization that welcomes artists of all ages and is founded on helping those in the arts. Check it out at www.art-with-heart.com .
